Electrical Capacitance Test

This test also called moisture mapping is a highly efficient, non-destructive testing service offering a very simple but cost-effective way to identify problems within a roofing construction that allows focusing on areas in need of attention thus minimising work required. What the test does is:

  • Map out areas that may contain entrapped water.

  • Identifies roofing areas for concern.

  • Also accepted on timber build-ups.

  • Complies to ASTM D7954.

All test methods will be complemented by thorough non-destructive visual inspection of all lap/seams especially upstand details and by testing of all field area lap/seams using a seam probe.

Once the tests are completed, EuroLDS will advise on the next steps and, if necessary, help to fix any defects.

+ Applications

  • Nearly all single-ply waterproofing systems.
  • Built-up bituminous membranes (felt) waterproofing systems.
  • Bituminous hotmelt roofs.
  • Ballasted roofs.
  • Green roofs.
  • Asphalt roofs.

+ Requirements

  • The membrane must be dry.
  • Built-up systems must have been exposed to sufficient water to seek out breaches, and hold sufficient moisture entrapped within the waterproofing system.
  • The correct range setting must be accurately set to ensure detection of trapped moisture within the waterproofing system.

+ Limitations

  • Cannot test inverted ballasted roof areas or inverted roof with pavers unless the upper layer is removed.

+ Health & Safety

Before commencement, EuroLDS will submit a RAMS (Risk Assessment and Method Statement) to the site management team for their review and approval. Health and safety procedures will be observed whilst working at heights. Furthermore, as most membranes can be slippery when wet or icy, testing may not be performed in frost, snow, heavy rain or high winds, unless deemed safe to do so by EuroLDS personnel.
